The pedagogy that guides Borboletas

A child carries a natural drive towards learning and development. Our role is to offer the right conditions in which they can explore, discover, build and develop their own capacities.

That asks the adult for a very conscious presence. Respect for individual development is not leaving a child to fend for themselves: it is knowing each one matures in their own time, and holding that without hurrying it.

A prepared environment is not a room scaled down to a child's size. It exists to answer their developmental needs: it favours movement, order, exploration, concentration, autonomy and the chance to work independently.

The materials let them find out for themselves when something needs another look. They do not say right or wrong: they give the chance to observe, correct, and trust what they are able to do.

Here a child is free to choose and to act, inside a prepared environment and within clear, respectful limits. It is not doing whatever they please: it is freedom within limits, and it has a purpose.

That purpose is autonomy, responsibility, concentration and development. A child holding their attention for a long stretch, with nobody breaking in, is doing the most important work of their day.

The guide does not teach from the front of the group. Her work begins in observation: she knows what each child needs, prepares the environment, and presents a material with care when she sees them ready.

This is not the absence of an adult but conscious, respectful intervention: she does not do for a child what they can already do, and she knows when to step in and when to give room so they can concentrate. We call that close accompaniment.

At Borboletas this is possible because the groups are small and mix ages: Comunidad Infantil and Casa de Niños. The younger ones learn by watching the older ones, and the older ones understand what they know better by explaining it.

That is why they take part in the real life of the house: caring for the space, preparing together what they are about to eat. It is not a chore; it is what grows autonomy, responsibility and a sense of belonging.
